Ensemble Modern I. “Where from? Where to?” – Myths, Nation and Identities

This is really a great chance to enjoy the performance of Ensemble Modern, the best contemporary music ensemble of the world: it resides in Frankfurt and performs at the most famous concert halls around the world. Two concert series give us a chance to pick up with the project that was premièred in Munich, December 2012, and presented original commissioned compositions by eight young Eastern European composers. The competition was fierce, so it’s a great pleasure to see three Latvians among them: Andris Dzenītis, Kristaps Pētersons and Jānis Petraškevičs.

Along with some samples of Latvian music, there is a chance for us to know the music created by Czechs, Poles, Slovenians and Hungarians. The musical boss in Munich was the world famous Péter Eötvös, but in Rīga we’ll have the determined Estonian Anu Tali as conductor. The project seeks to explore the eternal questions dealing with myth and identity. Composers were keen for a musical narrative and/or happening. The first group includes Matej Bonin (Slovenia), Judit Varga (Hungaria), the brilliant Pole Paweł Hendrich and Jānis Petraškevičs (Latvia) with his Darkroom – a fine sample of clever musical thinking. The second group comprises František Chaloupka (the Czech Republic), Nina Šenk (Slovenia) and the rest of Latvians: Andris Dzenītis with a musical Latvian cookbook, and Kristaps Pētersons with a fascinating performance involving money, a prime minister and other financial matters. The project has been designed and realized by Ensemble Modern and the Goethe-Instituts active in Eastern Europe.

The project “Where from? Where to?” – Myths, Nation and Identities" is an initiative of the Goethe-Institute (Central Eastern Europe) in Cooperation with the Ensemble Modern and the BHF-BANK-Stiftung.
