Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Widmann’s Fantasie
It is not so easy to meet Jorg Widmann: he gives lessons at Freiburg, he conducts in Dublin mostly, he performs as a chamber musician at all the most notable European festivals, and he is the clarinettist in demand all over the world. Widmann is something like a prototype from the past: he is a composer and a performer. He writes music and performs it, and other composers write music for his clarinet, too. They say, it was like that in Mozart time – composers mostly were conductors and performers, as well. It is doubtful whether Mozart himself was a skilled clarinettist, but his compositions for the instrument are definitely the goldmine of the repertoire.
